Search Page Best Practices

Overview

The objectives of recommendations on the Search Page are to cut through the noise. Help customer to navigate customer to the right product.

  • Quantity: 1-2 placements. If FindTM is enabled, one placement is fine, and quite frankly, we won’t object to having no placements on this page.
  • Location: Vertical placement in the right/left margin or a horizontal placement beneath or interspersed within the search results. Keep in mind the challenges in building robust behavioral search recommendations across the endless permutations of search terms that occur on the site. Model maturity is a function of search term popularity, so unless the keywords have sufficient search volume, recommendations may seem less relevant. As such, it’s generally not a best practice to slot a highly visible horizontal placement above the search results. If the site has an independent template for the No Search Results pages, our recommendations should be the highest-priority contentso, on these templates, push for multiple horizontal placements at the top of the page so that we can re-orient customers through personalized recommendations.
  • Strategies: Use a mix of search-based and personalized strategies—the latter offering good coverage if the search term has insufficient browse or purchase co-occurrence behavior to product quality recommendations.
